TAMPA - Look out monster trucks - here come the monster tanks.
The monster trucks and monster tanks invade Tampa Stadium as part of the Coors Superbowl of Supercross at 8 o'clock tonight. The trucks and the monster tanks, which are actually tanks placed on truck chassis, will take the course after the supercross races. They will try to make one lap around the course before they crush 15 cars.
The serious racing will be done by more than 100 supercross motorcycle racers in the 125-cc and 250-cc classes.
"The 250 is the focal point," said Mike Boykin, executive director of Supersports Production. "We'll have the top riders from all over the country here."
The event is one of 16 sanctioned by the American Motorcross Association. The supercross will be the first ever held in Tampa Stadium.
Boykin expects a crowd of 40,000 to 50,000 depending on walk-up sales. A tractor pull in February drew 51,000 to Tampa Stadium. Tickets are available at Tampa Stadium and will also be sold at Select-A-Seat outlets until 6 p.m. today. Reserve seating is $ 17 and general admission is $ 15.
First prize in the 250-cc class is $ 23,000. Contestants can also earn points in the AMA standings by placing. The first-place finisher will pick up 25 points and second place is worth 22 on a descending scale. The racer with the most points at the end of the season collects $ 100,000.
Local contestants include Plant City's Vince DeVane and Palm Harbor's Ron Tichenor. Tichenor is third in the 125-cc standings.
The contestants will go through elimination races before the finals. The course is approximately one-half mile and the race length will vary up to 20 laps.
