The eighth-annual USHRA Super Bowl of Motor Sports roared into Tampa Stadium Saturday night in front of 55,525 fans.
Featured were monster-truck races, mud races and hot-rod races. In the monster-truck division, the Equalizer and driver David Morris took the title by defeating the Crusher in the final round.
The Equalizer team had borrowed a tire from the Crusher team after blowing one of its own in a previous race. Al-so, the Equalizer got a break because it was defeated in the semifinals by Bigfoot. But Bigfoot was unable to answer the bell for the final round, and the Equalizer took advantage of the opportunity and won the "Super Bowl."
In the mud division, the Daydreamer, driven by Tampa's Tony Lamas, defeated the Beaver. In this division, 16-year-old Chris Sadling of Dade City won his first-ever UHRA race. Sadling made it to the semifinals were his car lost to the Beaver.
In the hot-rod division, Butch Schultz, driving his 1950 Mercury, won his first race in that division.
Stuntman Spanky Spangler also was on hand. He had his 1976 Monte Carlo suspended 167 feet in the air and was dropped onto three vans below. The stunt went off with no problems for Spangler, who was doing this stunt for the se-venth time in his career.
"It went exactly as planned," Spangler said, "It was a great crowd, and that made it easier to perform."
