The TNT Motorsports Hot Rod Pull Super Nationals
March 8th & 9th, 1985
Houston Astrodome, Houston, TX
Trucks:
Stomper Bully - Gayle Mefford
Blue Thunder - Kevin Dabney
Deuces Wild - Dale Hancock
Lon Ranger - Gary Bauer
King Krunch I (Blazer) - Paul "Pablo" Huffaker
King Krunch II (Silverado) - Scott Stephens
Course, as described by 4 Wheel and Off-Road Magazine: "... a 10-foot-high dirt hill followed by two crusher cars placed lengthwise in the monsters' path. Next they would have to negotiate a smaller hill and then power down a short straight and into a right turn, where they woul crush two more cars broadside. Another right turn would take them over a series of moguls, over another pair of lengthwise-positioned cars and then down to an agility test in which they would have to make a sharp U-turn and back-up into a stall. Finally they'd have to slog through a 100-foot mud pit, with a flagman ready to stop the clock at the far end."
Night one results:
1. Mefford (1 minute, 22.09 seconds)
2. Stephens (1 minute, 35 seconds)
3. Hancock
4. Bauer (assuming he finished ahead of Dabney, although it's never clearly stated)
5. Dabney (lost a full minute trying to shift into reverse to back into the stall)
6. Huffaker (DNF, broke front axle)
Night two results:
1. Mefford (under 1 1/2 minutes)
2. Hancock
3. Bauer
4. Dabney/Huffaker
5. Dabney/Huffaker (magazine doesn't state who placed where in these two spots)
6. Stephens (DNF, broke a front tie-rod bolt hitting the broadside cars at a bad angle)
Other notes:
-The trucks were racing for their share of a $1200 purse.
-In addition to monsters, five classes of pulling competition took place inside the Astrodome, including 2wd and 4wd trucks, and modified tractors.
-The coverage of this event, provided by Petersen's 4 Wheel and Off-Road Magazine, was part of a specially themed "Monster Mash" issue, published in July of 1985.
