Weekend Race Recap
Saturday 7:30PM -
Grave Digger Dominates Syracuse
The monsters returned to the New York State Fairgrounds Saturday night for their one time per year thrill ride. The Fairgrounds, normally a horse race track, transforms into one of the toughest tracks of the summer series. With very warm temperatures and no rain in sight for the first time in four years the crowd came out early for the Built Ford Tough Party in the Pits and stayed till the last autograph was signed by their heros.
Mike Vates was in a nostalgic mood as he remembered running the Black Stallion Ford in Syracuse in 1987. "The fans were great then and now their kids are coming with them. It is wild here, I love it, said Vaters in a pre-race interview. Other drivers shared their view of Syracuse. "I was an official here," said Scott Porier of Anger Managememt. "Now I am driving here. This is exciting."
The night was a good one for Pablo Hufaker aboard Grave Digger. He was the racing and freestyle events. His teammate Aaron Basl aboard the World Champion Truck Capatins Curse could not get anything going his was and was unable to give Digger a run for his money. "I run the Digger truck all year, learning how to handle the truck and then come out in Las Vegas with my Curse truck and win it all. Still, my first love is Grave Digger and my loyality is to Dennis and the team," said Pablo before a stand ovation from the fans after his big Freestyle win.
Racing Results:
Round One:
Anger Management broke a drive shaft in Qualifing.
Grave Digger beat Black Stallion
American Guardian over Blue Thunder
Superman defeated Captains Curse.
Round Two (Semi Finals)
Grave Digger over round one fast loser Captains Curse
Superman downed American Guardian
Race Finals
Grave Digger beat American Guardian (Superman Broke)
The track was tough on the big trucks with Anger Management, Superman, American Guardian and Grave Digger all experiencing mechanical problems.
The night also included Quad Wars with Team New Jersey dominating Team New York in both heat races and the main. Mike Vaters brought his jet quad out to thrill the fans. The quad sent a rooster tail of fire some 25 feet long behind him on the track only to have his fire put out early by fuel problems.
Billy Cole was scheduled to jump three monster trucks with his quad racer but instead opted to jump over 4 big monsters after hearing the fans cheer.
Monster Freestyle Results 90 sec each:
Anger Management broke did not run
Black Stallion 23
American Guardian 27 corkscrewed the truck at the :65 mark
Captains Curse 21
Blue Thunder 27 great wheelies with lots of air
Superman 14 broke and could not start at :33
Grave Digger 30 Pablo drove the wheels off the truck
Freestyle would see Anger Management unable to make the call so Captains Curse was the first truck out. Basel put on a solid effort to kick things off with some nice donuts and a couple good sky wheelies; believe he scored a 21. Next out was Mike Vaters and Black Stallion. Mike was able to hit all the obstacles on the track with some good momentum and closed it off with a nice sky wheelie over the racing set; I think Black Stallion's score was a 19. Blue Thunder hit the track next with good momentum, beautiful slap wheelie off the far van stack and very nice sky wheelies throughout the run. O'Donnel would score a 27 for his efforts. Next out was Rick Raab and American Guardian. Rick hit the track with a lot of noise and speed to start off. Rick had a couple weird hits off both van stacks but was able to recover nicely until he hit the backside of the racing cars which launched the truck sideways into the air crashing very hard on the right rear of the frame destroying the brand new body. Rick would be ok but the truck suffered a severe amount of damage (sorry Aaron). American Guardians score was a 27. Superman was next out and Chad started his run off nicely with some nice sky wheelies and some big air but unfortunately the transmission would let go only 40 seconds into his run. And last but not least would be Huffaker in Digger. Huffaker put on a very spectacular freestyle lasting almost 4 minutes long. Huffaker would take the win with a perfect 30 and that would mark the close to another year at Syracuse.
After Monster Jam the drivers met the fans and signed autographs for over an hour. Everyone left happy and ready for the next Monster Jam.
