Weekend Race Recap
Saturday 7:30pm - Tom Meents continued his dominating winter of racing by driving Maximum Destruction to another race event win, then two drivers considered to be the future of Monster Jam showed a sold out crowd of nearly 70,000 fans in Jacksonville Stadium that the future is now, Damon Bradshaw in Air Force Afterburner and Adam Anderson in Grave Digger tying for the Florida Freestyle Competition victory Saturday night.
Anderson started the rocking night in north Florida by setting the fastest qualifying time, but he was eliminated in the second round when Grave Digger knocked over a turning pole for a five second penalty that handed the win to Chad Fortune and Superman. Bradshaw took advantage of the fast loser opportunity in the second round, losing a close race to Tony Farrell and Blue Thunder but making the semifinals as the fast loser, then beat Chad Fortune and Superman to make it to the finals of a Speed TV Monster Jam event for the first time in his budding Monster Jam career. Meents continued to get faster round after round, eliminating Randy Moore and War Wizard, Jim Koehler in Avenger, and Blue Thunder to set up the finale against Bradshaw. The newcomer ran a solid race and kept it close but the seven time World Champion was able to record a truck length victory, Maximum Destruction winning yet again on Speed.
In freestyle Courtney Jolly in Pastrana 199 came off a jump and went right into the van stack, flipping her truck just 30 seconds into the run, scoring only 10 points from the judges but firing up the raucous Jacksonville crowd even further. It was Randy Moore who set the early pace, turning in what Dennis Anderson called his best freestyle ever in War Wizard, Moore moving into the hot seat with the lead and a score of 24 from the three judge panel. He wasn't there long, however, as Dan Evans brought Destroyer out next and put in a huge performance, highlighted by his leap over the bus stack in reverse and Destroyer went on top with a 26.
Bradshaw was next and the former Supercross star who has been getting stronger in Monster Jam week after week went big, filling the clock with a run full of sic air. Bradshaw's run ended with the transmission blowing and a huge fire erupting in the Air Force Afterburner. Bradshaw quickly escaped the burning machine as the Monster Jam officials extinguished the blaze and the judges scored the Air Force run a 29, taking the lead. Farrell came close to equalling Bradshaw but Blue Thunder's outstanding freestyle was scored a 28. Next up a pair of drivers who've won freestyle world titles took a shot at the leader, but Jim Koehler's performance in Avenger was held back a little by engine difficulties, and Meents' run in Maximum Destruction ended with 30 seconds left on the clock went the truck landed viciously on its side and shut down.
Anderson was the final contestant and was phenomenal again in his father's truck with several huge leaps and Digger Donuts turning on the crowd. The judges couldn't decide between Air Force and Grave Digger, both trucks earning scores of 29 to tie for the victory.
