Monster Jam Tampa
By: Larry Jewett
A sell-out crowd again filled the Raymond James Stadium as Monster Jam was greeted with warm weather and hot action. A field of 12 top Monster Trucks were joined by Pro Stadium action and high flying Freestyle Motocross. Monster qualifying set the stage for close competition as Grave Digger (Adam Anderson) nipped Maximum Destruction (Neil Elliott) by .06 seconds to earn the top berth. Digger’s bye run gave him a free pass to round two. In the eliminations, Monster Mutt (Candice Jolly) knocked off Thrasher (Pat Summa), Gunslinger (Scott Hartsock) trounced an injured War Wizard (Randy Moore), Cowboy (Steve Reynolds) defeated Backdraft (John Killenger), Escalade (George Balhan) topped Eradicator (Andy Slifko) and Maximum Destruction (Neil Elliott) edged Hot Wheels (Chuck Werner). Round two brought Grave Digger to the line against Monster Mutt and Digger dispatched the dog. Cowboy outgunned Gunslinger and Max D prevailed over Escalade. Gunslinger returned to the competition as the fast loser for the semi finals and he made it count, besting Grave Digger to earn a berth in the finals. Maximum Destruction outflew Cowboy to set up the showdown. At the green light, Gunslinger and Maximum Destruction were even through the first half of the course and a close finish required a better look for the judges. When it was all said and done, Maximum Destruction continued its Tampa domination, winning the Tampa event for the third year in a row.
When the UTI freestyle event graced the track, Thrasher set the standard with a 17. An early breakage for Backdraft resulted in a score of 6. Cowboy moved into the lead with a solid 22. Eradicator let it loose with a wheel deflating run through the course, but it was only good enough for a 21. Gunslinger suffered early damage and posted a non-competitive 7 for the scorebooks. An abbreviated freestyle for Hot Wheels brought 3 5s, a total of 15. Monster Mutt reached deep in the bag of tricks, closing with strong doughnuts, and took the lead with a 25. Escalade rolled with neons blazing and pushed the mark a little higher, scoring 26. With two truck remaining, Maximum Destruction hoped to raise the bar, but could manage to tie Escalade. Adam Anderson rolled to the floor and began to run rampant. Anderson, who had won freestyle each of the previous two weeks, was looking for a threepeat and he got it when he pulled off a masterful save, but then the truck slammed to the ground and rolled to the delight of the vocal crowd. The judges gave Grave Digger a 30, which put the win and threepeat in place. Jason Makuch bested Roger Cardot in the finals of the pro stadium Truck competition. Trevor Vines prevailed in freestyle motocross and celebrated with a backflip victory pass. Renowned stuntman Mark Hager, a resident of nearby Orlando, charged into the Steel Wall, impacting a tower of cars at 55 miles per hour to thrill the crowd.
