Weekend Race Recap
Saturday - 7:30PM
Another completely sold out stadium in Florida was treated to a night of non-stop action as the USHRA Monster Jam Florida continued to generate record attendance, this time at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, with Steve Reynolds recording the biggest racing victory of his career and Dennis Anderson rewarding his huge fan base with a freestyle performance for the ages.
On a night that was full of huge surprises in racing the biggest shocker may have been Reynolds driving his new Cowboy truck to the event victory, beating reigning World Racing Champion Madusa in the finals. Defending Citrus Bowl winner Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger looked like a serious contender for a second consecutive Orlando racing win when he set the fastest qualifying time and was seeded number one in the bracket. Gunslinger then earned a first round bye when Maximum Destruction broke before qualifying, but as fate would have it, Gunslinger broke at the end of the bye run and was out of action for the night. It was Madusa who took advantage of Gunslinger's misfortune. Despite losing to Cowboy in round one, she got Gunslinger's spot in round two by virtue of being the fastest round one loser and used the reprieve to top Superman and Reptoid to move into the finale. Cowboy won several close races in the bottom bracket to grab the other spot in the championship race. Reynolds, driving Hartsock's Cowboy truck, was able to follow up his teammate's 2005 success when he edged the current world champ for the event win.
It was clear that the huge crowd going crazy was pushing the monsters even higher when they came out for freestyle. Rick Raab flipped the American Guardian on his first move, and while the crowd loved it the scores from the judges were low. Chad Fortune also rolled Superman too early in the run, and Dan Evans took the early lead with a solid run in Destroyer. Evans held the lead until 2004 Freestyle World Champion Madusa came out with a blistering freestyle. While she too rolled the truck at the end of the run, she did it with very little time left on the clock and took over the spot in the Hot Seat with her score of 25. Next it was Neil Elliott, who took out the frustration of his truck breaking before racing. Elliott and the Maximum Destruction crew worked feverishly to fix the machine and then Elliott burned up the Citrus Bowl floor, the truck rolling over as time expired following some vintage cyclone donuts and took the lead with a 27. Anderson brought Grave Digger out with a frustration similar to Elliott's, losing his first round race due to a DQ for red lighting. So it was all about the freestyle for the icon and his fans, and Anderson went on to wow the crowd with 90 incredible seconds of mayhem that earned a 30 from the judges who turned in their scores at that point, but Digger had plenty left and after the scores were turned in Anderson continued for close to another 90 seconds, to give the Orlando fans a ragged edge encore that had every one of them on their feet.
Other winners in front of the rabid crowd included Canadian Jeff Banks in Freestyle Motocross, Chuck Davis in Street Warriors, and Jim Froman, who won the wild Mini Van Demo Derby.
