Monster Truck Winner Gunslinger Monster Freestyle Winner Predator Pro Stadium Trucks Winner Thomas White Quad Wars Winner Team Las Vegas (with a ponytail) Weekend Race Recap
Orlando, FL (February 26, 2000) Written by Melonie McKim of PACE Motor Sports,TM, a company of SFX Entertainment™
High-flying, car-crushing, truck-rolling, wheel-popping, endo-flipping action was here and caught on TNN cameras. Twelve trucks were on the dirt and focused on the checkered flag. Every race was tight. In only the first round, the track seemed to leap right up from the floor and bite some of these monsters.
In heat one against Reptoid, Nitro bit it. He crashed over an obstacle. As the truck swirled across the dirt, it spit the steering wheel out of the drivers window. It was over for him after that. He twisted like a pretzel and popped a front tire right off the truck. He was OUT for the night!
In the main event, Goldberg met Gunslinger. Goldberg is certainly intimidating. He's captured 6 wins so far this season and rolled the truck numerous times. All drivers know that Tom Meents is wild enough to do anything to get to a win. Tonight, the light went green and Gunslinger was neck-and-neck with Goldberg. Nearing the finish line, Scott Hartsock launched Gunslinger off a jump. He glided over the finish line in mid air, stretched out a bumper and pulled off the win. Goldberg was airborne beside him but his night ended in collision.
Goldberg got tangled with what we can only speculate was invisibile dark matter from space and went into a horrific endo-flip, tossing the truck 360 degrees tail-over-hood. Again, as he has done so many times before, he landed right-side up on his tires - but this time there were only three left. Where was the fourth tire? Rolling freely across the dirt in the opposite direction. Sorry Tom, you crazy son-of-a-gun.
Sky Hartley returned to racing tonight behind the wheel of Sting. Sting made it's USHRA freestyle debut last weekend in Uniondale. Tonight, he made his racing debut on TNN television. Sting powered through the heat races beating Eradicator in round one and then falling only to Goldberg in round three. Sting is definitely becoming a 2000 fast-favorite.
Also appearing for the first time in Orlando was the FMX team. It's the first time Orlando fans have seen FMX at the Citrus Bowl and they loved it! The riders pulled off high-flying syc tricks like cliff hangers, saran wraps, and a perfect superman executed by Kenny Yoho. Kenny displayed his insanity and passion by doing a 75 foot long jump some 30 feet in the air - BLIND-FOLDED. He landed it perfectly and went on to take the racing victory. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he left the track.
Pro Stadium trucks were catching as much air as the FMX team. The tightest pro stadium race of the night was between Alan Johnston and Thomas Ray White in round two. Johnston pulled ahead of White with only one one-hundredth of a second to spare. White had come back from a DNF in qualifying earlier in the night and eventually earned his way to the main event. There he met Mark Reed who had qualified with the second fastest time. White drove on to final victory.
In Quad Wars, it was Team Las Vegas vs. Team Orlando. Only one team could advance from tonight into the finals in Jacksonville. Both teams salivated for the win. They tied after the first two rounds, one to one. Then Joe Brow, a Team Orlando captain, issued a challenge to Team Las Vegas. He was so confident with the hometown team that he taunted the captains of Team Las Vegas with his most prized possession. He declared that if Team Las Vegas won, and he was sure they wouldn't, the Las Vegas team captains could cut off his 20 year old pony tail right there in front of everyone. He'd been growing it so long he couldn't remember when he'd started. He chuckled with his coy challenge. Little did he know he'd stuck his foot in his mouth.
With only two laps to go, the two opposing team captains collided with each other on the back straight. Randy "Dinky" Dinkins of Team Orlando veered off-course and into a haybale. Team Vegas regained control and drove on to the finish line. USHRA officials ruled the contact incidental, not intentional, and declared Team Vegas the winner.
Team Las Vegas captains mockingly summoned Joe to the finish line. With his head hung low, Joe trudged to the line. The Las Vegas captains ruthlessly sheered Joe's ancient locks. Team Vegas took home two trophies, the actual racing trophy and Joe's lengthy golden PonyTail.
The winners take all - including a ponytail!
