Notes: This was the tenth anniversary for TNT pulling at the Houston Astrodome. It was only about the 5th year for the monster trucks. Before the monster trucks were involved, TNT had mud racing as well as truck and tractor pulling. Even as the monsters were becoming more popular, mud racing was still involved up until the 1988 version of TNT in the Astrodome. This was the very first event at which Mark Brandt ever drove for the Awesome Kong team, but blew a head gasket in the quarterfinals. Dennis Anderson was driving the brand new Grave Digger II, so new in fact that the wheels were still from the original Grave Digger--copper colored. Anderson always seemed to have trouble in the Astrodome, and this was no exception, as Grave Digger broke down just before the turn in the quarterfinals, losing an engine. Bob Breen and Wild Hair also had problems near the turn, however Breen's problem was that the rear wheel steering went out. When Dave Wieczorek won this event, it was quite a shock to see Night Life cross the finish line ahead of Andy Brass and Bigfoot. However, those close to monster truck racing were not surprised because Wieczorek, though an independent driver, was extremely well regarded as a driver. Despite this, the wins on the TNT circuit came few and far between for Wieczorek.
