Date: January 7th, 1989.
Track: Outdoors, straight stretch, 6 cars, inside turn, long elevated straight stretch, another inside turn, over the same 6 cars again. Finish line is at the end of the cars.
Lineup: Allen Gaines (Orange Blossom Express), Ernie Brookens (Trak Attack), Jim Ries (AM/PM Rocket), Debbie Rhoden (Hot Stuff), Jim Kramer (Bigfoot VII), Phil Tonseth (California Gold), Bob Chandler (Bigfoot Fastrax)
Round 1:
Ries def. Rhoden
Brookens def. Tonseth
Chandler def. Gaines
Kramer bye
Semifinals:
Ries def. Kramer
Brookens def. Chandler
-Ries and Brookens broke
Finals:
Kramer (break rule) def. Chandler (break rule)
Notes: Jim Ries hit the second set of cars wrong and smashed the front end in the first showing ever for the AM/PM Rocket. California Gold was finished the afternoon of the event. This event also marked the first time Allen Gaines ran the Orange Blossom Express tank. Allen was using a chair similar to that used in 18-wheel trucks. Gaines was boucing all over the place and even lost his helmet by the end of the first race. During Brookens' race against Chandler, his windshield frosted over due to the engine running too high of a temperature. Because of this, Brookens had to bow out of the final, giving the berth to Chandler in the Bigfoot Fastrax. This was one of the few times Chandler ever raced the tank truck in competition. Jeff Bainter was supposed to debut a new truck, High Voltage (which at the time was called the Wrangler), at the event, however he broke something the night before the event, and was not able to race. Jim Kramer's Bigfoot was having transmission problems all evening.
