Date: October 23rd, 1987.
Track: Indoors, pull a sled 100ft. down a straight stretch, an outside turn, a 200ft. straight stretch with a set of 6 cars. Finish line is 40ft. after the last car.
Notes: This was a USHRA Fall Championships event. Jim Kramer was driving Bigfoot VI at this event and Fred Shafer, fresh off a rollover at Anaheim, was driving a new Bearfoot, Bearfoot III. This was the first appearance for Bret Engleman's brand new Heartbeat. This was Engleman's 3rd monster truck, the other two being Michigan Ice Monster and Michigan Ice Monster Jr. Engleman cut up the Michigan Ice Monster to use for Heartbeat. At the time, Heartbeat was one of the first monster trucks to use a floating suspension. This event marked the first time Diehl Wilson ever ran the Virginia Giant in a head-to-head race. Shafer won easily in the first round due to Joe Renke's Toy blowing out the rear driveshaft while trying to pull the sled. In the previous heat, Jim Kramer is disqualified after not waiting for Andy Brass to clear the track after disconnecting Bigfoot from the sled. Kirk Dabney and Bret Engleman both had major breakage in their first heat. Dabney broke the left-front wheel after hitting the cars, and Engleman completely tore off the rar wheels from under Heartbeat. Cliff Starbird's Wild Stang broke a tie rod after losing the race in the semifinals.

Shafer won easily in the first round due to Joe Renke's Toy blowing out the front driveshaft while trying to pull the sled. I'm pretty sure the Toy truck broke the rear driveshaft... in the footage I have, it appears that the truck is pulling the sled using only the front tires.

As with Buffalo, I took a stop watch to this event. Here are my results:
DRIVER = ET --- Pull --- UnHook --- Cars ============================ Kramer = 27.3 --- 6.5 --- 5.7 --- 15.2 Starbird = 33.2 --- 9.7 --- 4.5 --- 19.0
Shafer = 33.7 --- 7.8 --- 7.9 --- 18.1 Renke = DNF --- DNF --- DNF --- DNF
Dabney = DNF --- 7.7 --- 5.9 --- DNF Engleman = DNF --- DNF --- DNF --- DNF
Marquart = 30.9 --- 10.0 --- 6.8 --- 14.1 Maples = 37.1 --- 7.5 --- 5.5 --- 24.1
Wilson = 31.2 --- 7.6 --- 5.5 --- 18.1 Starbird = 50.7 --- 9.4 --- 10.2 --- 31.1
SEMI-FINALS ======== Wilson = 28.1 --- 7.7 --- 4.3 --- 16.1 Maples = 32.6 --- 6.5 --- 5.3 --- 20.9
Marquart = 29.3 --- 8.5 --- 4.1 --- 16.7 Shafer = 30.5 --- 7.1 --- 6.6 --- 16.8
FINALS ===== Wilson = 29.0 --- 6.2 --- 5.2 --- 17.6 Shafer = 29.5 --- 6.6 --- 8.3 --- 14.6
GRUDGE MATCH =========== Kramer = 24.9 --- 7.1 --- 5.1 --- 12.8 Wilson = DNF --- 6.4 --- DNF --- DNF
BESTS ==== ~~RUNS~~ Kramer - 24.9 Kramer - 27.3 Wilson - 28.1 Wilson - 29.0 Marquart - 29.3
~~PULLS~~ Wilson - 6.2 Wilson - 6.4 Kramer - 6.5 Maples - 6.5 Shafer - 6.6
~~UNHOOKS~~ Marquart - 4.1 (he got kind of lucky on that one) Wilson - 4.3 Starbird - 4.5 Kramer - 5.1 Wilson - 5.2
~~CARS~~ Kramer - 12.8 Marquart - 14.1 Shafer -14.6 Kramer - 15.2 Wilson - 16.1
BEST BY DRIVER =========== Dabney = DNF --- 7.7 --- 5.9 --- DNF Engleman = DNF --- DNF -- DNF --- DNF Kramer = 24.9 --- 6.5 --- 5.1 --- 12.8 Maples = 32.6 --- 6.5 --- 5.3 --- 20.9 Marquart = 29.3 --- 8.5 --- 4.1 --- 14.1 Renke = DNF --- DNF --- DNF --- DNF Shafer = 29.5 --- 6.6 --- 6.6 --- 14.6 Starbird = 33.2 --- 9.4 --- 4.5 --- 19.0 Wilson = 28.1 --- 6.2 --- 4.3 --- 16.1
Keep in mind how I'm getting these numbers, of course. It's just eyeballing it based on an edited, tape-delayed television broadcast with a hand-held stopwatch. I can't guarentee that the tape edits are in sync. I've taken multiple readings of all the runs and used the averages, though, and I'm only taking it out to tenths, so I think I'm fairly accurate with the results. But jsut remember, this isn't MLMT laser-guided timing.
