Date: June
Track: Outdoors, the trucks start on top of a dirt hill, then over a set of 6 cars, and a dirt hill. The finish line is in the middle of the dirt hill.
Lineup: Deihl Wilson (Virginia Giant), Kevin Dabney (Duraliner Giant), Dave Marquart (Excaliber), Don Maples (Samson I), Fred Shafer (Lil' Bearfoot), Gary Bauer (Lon Ranger), Jim Kramer (Bigfoot VI), Steve Helms (Skoal Bandit)
Results:
Round 1: Dabney def. Wilson Marquart def. Maples Shafer def. Bauer Kramer def. Helms -Marquart blew an engine
Finals: Kramer def. Dabney (break rule)
Notes: This was one of the last events Fred Shafer ever ran Lil' Bearfoot at. Shortly after this event the truck was sold to Barry Packard, who still ran it with the same name. Dave Marquart had Excaliber all set to race Jim Kramer's Bigfoot for the championship, but couldn't start the truck, giving Kevin Dabney's Duraliner Giant a shot. However, Dabney also blew an engine during the race, giving Kramer the win.

I am going to guess that this was later in the year than March. Duraliner Giant had its newer paint scheme for this one, and I believe this may have been one of its first events with that paint. For Minny and Pittsburgh, it had its older paint scheme, which would obviously place those earlier in the year.

This event was run in June. I can't recall the actual date. I just remember it sprinkled all night long and that kept the crowd down.

Good to know...I am trying to nail down a timeline for 1987. This helps tremendously.

Why was Fred driving little Bear foot? Was he still rebuilding #4 into #5?
Just curious.

That is a really interesting question. According to Barry Packard, he bought Lil' Bear Foot in March of '87, so if this show took place in June, Fred either was in a pinch because of the new Bear Foot not being ready, or Barry's timeline was off, and Fred still owned the truck. Either way, I think the new Bear Foot was finished soon after this show.

Of course too you have to consider that the announcers weren't always right about who was driving. I was watching an old race the other day where the screen said Andy Brass was Driving but it was clearly Kramer. Andy was unhooking him from the sled.
I've seen many instances like that so just because they said Fred doesn't necessarily mean it was him.

Yes, at that time the announcers were wrong quite often, especially with pronunciations, however in this case they were right. It definitely was Fred Shafer driving Lil' Bear Foot there.

Interesting. I guess you're right now that I think about it because Barry would usually hang out the window but Fred never would.
Probably like you say, Fred's "new" truck wasn't ready and Barry probably needed a "day off" and it worked out that way.
Great stuff!

Since photographs of this event were recently posted on Mayhem, I got to thinking about it again (not that you could ever forget this event), but this time when I watched it, I had my stopwatch in hand. Being the stats nut I am, I took the elapsed times for all of the televised runs (average of 6 for each) and here were the results:
Dabney (9.8) def Wilson (10.9) Marquart (9.4) def Maples (11.6) Shafer (12.6) def Bauer (13.1) Kramer (7.7) def Helms (8.1)
Kramer (8.2) def Dabney (9.2)
Unfortunately, that still doesn't answer the question everyone has from this event: would Marquart have beaten Kramer. Too bad we'll never know. Still a great final round, and an awesome call by Mike Galloway (my personal favorite)

I have a stub from a show in Buffalo in the mid-late 80s and am trying to confirm the exact year. If it is '87 it may help you determine the exact day for your records as well. The stub reads, "Sat Jun 0" and then is torn off.
Below are the options, maybe you know when there were races:
June 01 1985 June 08 1985 June 07 1986 June 06 1987 June 04 1988 June 03 1989
