Kramer would break the transmission after tying his own World Record of 70 ft., which he set at Pontiac earlier in the year. Jake Henke's Aces High was disqualified in its first round win over Barry Packard's Lil' Bearfoot because Henke redlighted. Gary Bauer's Lon Ranger had a transfer case malfunction, costing him the race against Kirk Dabney's Duraliner Giant. Jeff Bainter's Hot Stuff would also suffer a mechanical failure, giving Don Maple's Samson I an easy victory.
