Date: January, 1988?
Track: Outdoors, a short straight stretch, set of 4 cars, 90 degree turn, a set of 4 cars, a 90 degree turn, over the set of 4 cars the competitor started on. Finish line is the starting line.
Lineup: Todd Blaeser (Hawaiian Punch), Joe Renke (The Toy), Jim Reis (AM/PM Boss), Bruce Gault (Barbarian), Dave Bell (So High Too), Gary Savin (Skoal Bandit), George Cole (Gator), William Powers (Virginia Beach Beast), Jim Kramer (Bigfoot VII)
Results:
Round1: Savin def. Blaeser Ries def. Rake Bell def. Gault
Finals: Ries def. Savin
Tank Finals: Cole def. Powers
Notes: Savin broke the steering in the Skoal Bandit during the first race, however Blaeser and Hawaiian Punch also broke, so they gave the race to the Skoal Bandit because Savin was closer to the finish line. Joe Rake's Toy broke both driveshafts on the first set of cars in the first round. Bruce Gault broke the steering on Barbarian. This is not the same Barbarian as the orange truck that ran with TNT around the same time. Gault's Barbarian was a white van with 44" tires on it. Cole's Gator and Powers' Virginia Beach Beast run into eachother at the finish line. This show marked the first in a series of USHRA sponsored distance jump for Bigfoot VII and Jim Kramer. Other events in which this took place were Pontiac and Tampa. At this particular event, in Anaheim Stadium, the cars were directly in line with the foul pole, making it slightly dangerous.

I believe this was the weekend that the sand dragster crashed into the sled and broke its axle off into the crowd, prompting Mike Galloway's infamous call of, "Oh s--t, we just killed people. We just killed a bunch of people." Miraculously, no one was actually killed. USHRA banned paddle tires in their mud racing divisions immediately after this incident.

Hmm, there wasn't any mud racing at this event, perhaps it was the night before this? I'm not real familiar with that incident, but it might have been the year before, as I've never seen Anaheim '87, but I hear it was televised.

It was definitely 1988, as my friend was in attendance for that incident. The dragster was intended to provide a preview for a sand drag event taking place somewhere else the following weekend.
